No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
