Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
